the more links you have pointing to your site and the faster it will get indexed.

I will like to add some thing to what juliensimon said.

The more quality links you have, the faster and more pages will get indexed

My site was indexed within a week. But it was not ranked in the serps until some backlinks pointed to my site after another week.

I have to agree with this, indexing is relatively easy to get done quickly, our site got indexed within 2 days (only 8 pages).

Its getting the serp's up and if you think its needed some PR (I am not a fan of using PR as a benchmark, but I know some are) - btw we got PR 2 in about a month because of the quality backlinks and the relative content between these sites and our pages within our site.
You can have a great site linking to you but if they are a knitting supply site and you sell potatoes don't expect too much from it haha.

goodluck,
craig

I usually submit a few new articles to Ezinearticles and a few other good article directories and I always get indexed within the week. This is because EZA has high PR and is spidered frequently throughout the day.

After you post a couple of links to your site, google should index it within 24 - 48 hours.

On a couple of my sites, they were indexed 24 hours after I bought the domain name and setup the account on the server. I had not even posted a single link, or even started uploading my files and google already had html root indexed.

my blog post usually takes for about an hour and sometimes for just a couple minutes.. matt cutts discuss about this crawling and indexing more often when they remove the supplemental thing, if you remember it..

I've had sites indexed on Google within 24 hours by subscribing to my RSS feed from my Google homepage and others within 2 days by submitting a sitemap to them.

I currently just keep my sitemap updated and use ping-o-matic which has now indexed over 7,500 pages on Google Blog Search.

I don't see there is a set rule to how long it takes for your site to be indexed. I have a few sites with not even a single back link and they have got indexed. But some of them took 3 days, some took 15 days. Other way round, yes i agree that it is always wise to get some quality links to your site. This definitely helps.
