Hi,

Has everyone read Google's guidance to webmasters?

Strikes me that giving Google what it wants, has got to be a good strategy.

Hi Clare,

It's always the best strategy to follow the guidelines of each search engine - as long as you can get your site to the top of the rankings. But if following the guidelines prevents that, as it often does, then the guidelines have to go.

Phil, do you mean that (some) Google guidlines are not accurate and following them would not help getting a website to the top of the rankings?
If that's the case then which guideline is not to be followed?

It's not that they are not accurate, Joanie. It's that staying within the guidelines means that websites in competitive areas cannot get high enough up the rankings for their main searchterms. Only by abandoning the guidelines, and doing things that Google doesn't want us to do, can get those sites in high positions.

So what doesn't Google want us to do exactly?

Are we all doing things that could ban us from appearing on a google result page?

Google doesn't want us to Spam

But google is a machine, so spam is possible.

Look for cheap cigarettes on google and then click on some of the related pages links. Similar pages

I don't know how travel is related to smoking other then that you are not allowed to smoke in an airplane. :wink:

Google doesn't want us to use things like hidden text, hidden links, auto-redirecting pages, doorway pages, and all that type of thing. They list some of them in the page that discountdomains linked to.
