It should ideally between 250-500 words. More than this may be too long for the reader and less than this may not be enough to give good information.
But emphasis should be on quality content, rather than length of the content.

For Google the more content relevant to your keywords you have on a page the more google likes it. Google is very hungry and the more you can feed it the happier you will make it.

The problem is that you can't just have content for content sake if you want to have a user friendly site. Without giving an exact answer you should have as much content as possible without wasting your readers time with fluff or keyword spam.

Try writing in a natural way and completely forget about the length and that would be the optimal length. This way, one of your articles could be 250 words and another one 850 words in length, based on how much explanations and clarifications you have been using and writing.

There's no such thing as optimal content length. You want enough content on your page to engage your audience and provide the information you are looking for while naturally working in whatever keywords that you're targeting.

If you have a lot of affiliate listings on a page, you'll also want enough content on there to overrule the affiliate listings so to speak and to leave the page as unique and valuable in the eyes of the search engines.

Instead of worrying about content length, worry about providing the information that you are trying to provide. Keep your paragraphs short to make it easy to read, and include the use of lists, bullet points and so forth to break the text up further.

As long as the content is delivering the required info, the length of content does not matter.

For example: you can find some answers to question in google search results where the answers are of only 1 or 2 lines.

I don't pay much attention to my content length, as long as my visitors will be able to read what I have to say as well as properly optimize my keywords within my content. Sometimes even 300 words is enough to provide visitors the information they seek/need.

About articles I post on my blogs, If the content is too long, like 1000 words, I separate them into two parts so that my readers won't get bored reading.

As long as your content is unique, precise and straight to the point, I don't think you should be concerned with the article or post length.
