I heard it was dead, I also heard it would be updated four times/year in the future.
Google is still playing dumb so who knows?
This brings me to the question; Google knows the value of that ranking for website owners, they invented it themself so why are they not giving any proper expaination on why it is not updated anymore?
If you ask me, they are acting kind of arrogant

Somehow I have the feeling that they are receiving many emails with this question allready, it would be odd if they didn't but still I have seen nothing that looked like and answer on the whole internet.

I kind of hope they start it back up; however, I find that I stay more constant with link building when I don't have the "I'll wait for next update to see where I stand" mentality.

I think its exactly the opposite, most people like concrete results, and instant gratification (this is why polaroids were popular back in the day).
People do like to know if their linkbuilding efforts are paying off. Google dosen't like 'linkbuilding' and seo because it skews their results. So, instead of or perhaps in addition to, improving their algo they figure they will just take away the gratification. With no concrete results people get easily discouraged, resulting in less seo and more relavant results on google's part.
Maybe I am being too cynical but its either that or google is planning some really huge and a big crazy update is just around the corner.
Also is it just me or now that it owns the worlds most popular search engine, adsense, gmail, and is rumoured to be lauching gbrowser, is google becoming the microsoft of the internet ?

Well if this was the reason, they could just change the algo to not enough rely on links... So I doubt that has anything to do with this.

As ehman said, Google isn't updating it cuz they can't, its because they don't want to. The only benefits that visible PR have are a)sell links based on it and B)Use it as a measure of SEO progress. Both of which Google frowns upon, so much so that if they were smart (and they are) they would just remove PR completely from the public eye. It was an interesting idea when it was launched, but now it is being treated like currency and has become counter productive. I think they should have pulled PR from the directory and toolbar long ago, and hopefully they will real soon.

in my opinion actually rankings are what provide a measure of SEO progress.
Google will eventually update. dont forget that pagerank gives them a ton of marketing

Google is apparently up to something.

Personally I'd put money on a major update within 4 weeks. Probably sooner, rather than later.

That uncertainty....we have to consider penalizing Google
for their behaviour, possibly even ban them...

it's really strange,
Google got big by using PageRank, will they let their trademark fade away?
I don't think so

Well, i still have the PR 6/10 showing which i got nearly 2 weeks ago, as discussed here: http://www.v7n.com/forums/google-forum/13637-pagerank-update-has-begun.html
I have a really hard time believing that it's a clitch or something from Google. Some of you say that sometimes the toolbar will show a pr without it actually being there. I have heard of this lasting 5 minutes, but not 2 weeks as it is in my case.
It is not only my toolbar that showes that. All toolbars do, so do the online pagerank checkers.
Not only that, i also got the exact pagerank i expected. Someone also said that i can't jump from 0 - 6, but i've been waiting for that pagerank for over 7 months.
The real question is, is whether or not this pagerank i got is real. What do you think? Is it real?

I'll jump on the bandwagon and say within the next 30 days... but I predicted september 2nd earlier so don't count on it
the question remains whether a toolbar update will matter at all or not. My vote is on 'not'.

Isn't it updating now?
I work on a mac so I'm immune to checking pr every five minutes but Prog shows that http://www.bluefind.com/dir/594.php is a pr7 so thats why runillo would be a pr6, I understand from other threads that bluefind wasn't showing pr before as he says he was pr0 before we must have had some update, no?

I need it to hold off for about another week or so. So I am saying over the October 15-18 weekend.
Personally I think PageRank is a good thing. It gives you an idea of the authority or importants of a site. Not in all cases, but it most cases.

still waiting for the update, i have got like 1,000 links to a site, and still PR0 - google became important to webmasters because of pagerank .. they shouldn't let it down.
