No. Just tell the world that Google stinks, and they need another one. If we have 30% of all webmaster putting this on their site, THEN we will have the old google back

You can argue the pros and cons of who has moral rights to what, but history shows us that again and again, those who ignore that which serves the greater good may prosper for a while but in the end they they usually suffer for it.
Am I talking about search engines or webmasters? Up to you where you apply it

The moral obligation is there for all parties.
I, Brian - I think your are talking about what actually happens, and the rest of us are talking about they way the world shold be.
Basically, if a Web Browser controls what you see on the web, then they would be ignoring their moral obligation to be totally unbiased to sites.
Google is not far off a Web Browser - only it gives you the URL's to chose from instead of you typing it in.
If Google ignore their moral obligations they can control the sites that Web users visit.
Ignoring something does NOT make it go away.

gooles obligation is to themselves. after most of the mom and pop shops
lost their rankings they spent all year towards gaining what are their options? if you are not paying for adwords you wont be found.
oh and with more competiton for the top 3 spots would that drive up the
price for these terms? $$$$
so the "free ad" from google is now gone and what are you going to do?
You have to spend now for adwords or overture. If your term is competitive well you could spend thousands in a day or more for one keyphrase that is competitive. if you were pushing for an ipo and you already were the publics favorite would an executive see this as an oportunity to boost the earnings on the last quarter and get all this done before yahoo or msn unleashes their new competition? timing and dollars?

Exactly - moral obligation has absolutely nothing to do with it at all.

It never occurred to me until now that Google actually profits (adwords) when sites suddenly lose their rankings. What incentive do they have to do something crazy like test their algorithm updates?

They need to stay ahead of the rest of the other search engines, or else they'll start to loose market share.

Google is like a public service, yet run by a business, I'm afraid the business side is taking over and whena business has a monopoly, there's no way I could trust that they give unbiased search results.

You can already see some Ink SERP's on Yahoo. It looks like they are testing Ink on Yahoo already.

Well here is a good one. One of the many little things I've noticed at google was my index page was a pr 4 for a long time with my 6 internal pages also ranking at 4. Well today for the first time ever google says my pr is 5 for my index page, ha considering no one can find it in the index for its only real keyphrase . Thanks for the help google. Also I have been seeing ink results filtering thru just like when they took google on. I cant wait for the change.
