Is this duplicated content?

Hello Forum,

There are many (free) articles on the web that you can use in your own website. Good articles can be a valuable addition to the already existing content of a website.

My question is, if I publish (legal of course) an article about a certain topic (related to my own content) and other websites are using the same article in their website, will Google see this as duplicated content? (and penalize my site or somebody else's for that)

Thanks for your opinion!

most of the duplicate content filtering stuff happens after the pages are indexed I think...it does not hurt you to add good articles that are sydicated elsewhere...also differences in site navigation and link structure will usually prevent many pages from being filtered out as duplicate content.

Does Google have the capabilities to track duplicate contents between billions of pages?

- At this time, I don't think so but it will happen soon or later.

true, smarties. I don't think Google has the capabilities to analyze whole pages for similarities. However, what I think does happen is that if you use duplicate content in a bad way, eventually someone will point it out to Google, and then a human editor may penalize you. That would be difficult to overcome, and probably not worth the risk.

I'm sure as long as you are obviously using syndicated content, it shouldn't be a problem.

Thanks all three for your reply, it makes me feel a lot more comfortable about this. Currently Google is doing strange things with their PR thing and I don't want to be one of the reasons by using 'duplicated' content.

(However, I am also not an PR 'addict' I always focus on 'content')

Thanks guys!

Google has 2 patents out for detect duplicate content Detecting duplicate and near-duplicate files and Detecting query-specific duplicate documents. I don't think it is a question if they can but do they.
