Will invisible text hurt

Invisible text on a page. I want to set some divs to invisible and then when a mouse is over an image a div filled with text will appear next to the image. So will I get in trouble with divs set to invisible?

I'd like to know about this too.

I wouldn't take the risk though. Nobody is going to have a definitive answer.

Quality Guidelines - Specific recommendations:

* Avoid hidden text or hidden links.
* Don't employ cloaking or sneaky redirects.
* Don't send automated queries to Google.
* Don't load pages with irrelevant words.
* Don't create multiple pages, subdomains, or domains with substantially duplicate content.
* Avoid "doorway" pages created just for search engines, or other "cookie cutter" approaches such as affiliate programs with little or no original content.

back when I first got on the web I used a good bit of invisible text (white on white at that)

not that long ago I noticed one of my somewhat sketchy sites still was indexed and still had that white on white text (and some of them were links) - I removed what I saw of it...

IMHO with what I currently know there is no real reason to use invisible text...just about anything you can do with it you can do without it...and avoid the associated risk.

Actually invisible text and I am NOT talking about white on white but actually invisible is used for screen readers contained inside a css class “display: none” combined with Anchor links (not "anchor text"). I use it and everyone should learn to use it eg:

Code:
body { voice-family: male } acronym { speak: spell-out } abbr { speak: spell-out } a.skip { display: none }
Please read http://www.v7n.com/forums/web-usability/1237-all-you-need-accessibility.html

Sure you can cheat Google because it does not read CSS files but you would be one desperate lame ass to do so.

all SEO is cheating Google, but I do not think that using invisible text is a good longterm business strategy.

I strongly disagree with that statement. Well, I guess it depends on your definition of "SEO".
