How to tell is a site is a linkfarm?

I was told to be alert to linkfarm when I first knew about SEO,while long time past away, I still have no idea how to tell whether a site is a linkfarm.
Does anyone here could give me some advice? Or is there any tool that could help me??

If you came across a website or blog that has several outgoing links that aren't related to each other, think twice before joining because it may be a link farm, and no white hat SEO joins a website linking to unrelated sites. Linkfarms has lists of websites that links to each other and they are often low quality websites. Mostly this is done using an automatic tool/software, and commonly used by adult sites.
