Different PR's

My home page gets a different PR:
When I just type in the domain without the index.cfm page behind it it gets a PR5, when I type it in with the index.cfm (which is the default page) it gets a pr 4.

Anyone know why?
The index.cfm page has been the default pge for over 2 years now, so it cannot be that.

GlobalSurfers: Very interesting. Also globalsurfers.com has a PR2 and globalsurfers.com/index.cfm has a PR1. In both cases when you add the index.cfm you the page dropped its PR by 1.

All websites are treated this way. Google recognizes the .com as one page and the .com/index as another page below the .com .

The reason why some people have the same .com PR as the .com/index PR is that they have a strong PR for the .com.

Don't sweat it, its no big deal, just keep getting links that use the URL .com.

Yup, same happens with me. www.photographycorner.com is a PR 6, and www.photographycorner.com/portal.php and www.photographycorner.com/index.php are both PR5's (even though '/' and /portal.php are the same page)

It does this because it thinks there are 2 different pages. I dont even have a PR on /index.php, but this is because I dont link to it anywhere, even on my site I use http://www.must-have-software.net/ because that way it doesn't split the PR btwn just / and /index.php

Also, isn't it because chances are, inbound links are linking to domain.com, rather then domain.com/index.cfm?

I would almost say that is the reason for sure, but I'm still a learner here, so I'll leave the definites to the pros..........

I am worried about the same thing for 2 reasons.
-Pr is split between two pages
-Same content==> multiple content=>punishment.

There must be a way to fix this. One possible suggestion. Create index.html and 301 redirect it to /index.php or index.cfm...

I wouldn't worry too much about the duplicate content penalty. Even if Google saw those two pages as duplicate content (which I really doubt), the worst they would do is kick one of those links to the bottom of the search results. This shouldn't matter, since the other link will retain its position, and it points to the same page anyway.

The 301 redirect is probably a good idea, since it will eventually pass all that page rank on to a single page. But I would redirect from the lower pagerank page to the higher pagerank page, and not the other way around.

Couple of questions:

One, can you use a 301 redirect to redirect from a URL like

www.mysite.com/index.php

to a URL like

www.mysite.com/

(given that they are the same page). Pretty sure that you can, but not sure I've ever seen this done.

Two, are http://mysite.com/ and http://mysite.com are seen as two different pages by Google (since one has a trailing slash and one doesn't)?

Only the server knows that www.mysite.co.uk/index.asp is the same as www.mysite.co.uk becuase you have to set it up in IIS or other server admin... so SE dont have a clue.
