I've been a professional programmer for over 8 years with the last 5 years devoted to Internet database applications. I consider myself a wiz with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, VBScript, ASP, and SQL Server. However, I'm a baby when it comes to driving traffic to a website.
My journey to learn what makes a website do well in search engines began 1 week ago. In that time I feel I've learned a lot. But more than that, I'm frustrated by the amount of contradictary information and vague information. It seems we are all tossing about helplessly at the search engine's whims. Obviously some people have mastered the art--to get on that first page. I guess I don't understand why this has to be such a mystery. Why don't representatives of these major search engines join in the forums and answer some of these questions with solid answers? Who loses if they answer questions directly such as "Yes, having multiple domains containing identical content will get you penalized." Why can't they just come out and say that? Instead we, have 1000 posts of people claiming to know saying, "yes, this will get you penalized". Then you have 1000 posts from people providing examples of people doing exactly that and doing well in Google, etc. Just tell us what rules you want us to play by, and we'll do it. As it is, a lot of decent, honest webmasters struggle to get good, relevant companies ranked well in the search engines because it's all a cloud of mystery. Sure there are plenty of solid, obvious things people can do. But I see a lot of the same questions with no solid answers...just theories.
And maybe some of the staffers at the search engines are replying in the forums....anonymously. But that doesn't help the reader who doesn't know if it's just another guy with an opinion.
