there have been studies done that show that banner ads are more "tuned out" than text links are. It kinda goes along with the theory that the best advertising is the kind that doesn't look like advertising.

However,I think it also depends on your target market for the banner ads. For instance, webmasters or people looking to promote their site in some way may be more inclined to see the larger ads like banners and click em, especially on very content rich websites. A prime example of this is here: http://www.seobook.com

Scroll down till you see

then compare it to a text link above or below that and you'll see it stands out much more and grabs attention. Whereas big banners like on hotmail accounts tend to be ignored because it takes up the whole page and resembles what we think of as spam..just my opinions

Text ads might get noticed, I personally ignore almost all graphic ads. There are so many free ipod, free smily and other free crap and cheap crap ads that its not that hard to develop blindness towards them.

I tend to think the same. The more annoying banners the designers come up with the more users learn to ignore banner ads.

it depends upon the products...some things that are overtly visually appealing may be better with image ads, but most things are currently better with text

Sorry to drag into the world of offtopic here.

Re: SeoBoo.com - The way they try to promote their product puts me off from buying it completely ... Contradiction: "ONLY current SEO book on the planet", "#1 ranked SEO Book", "top spot for SEO Book on google, and yahoo" (very easy to achieve if there is no competition - if it were top spot for SEO, ok maybe then I would be impressed)

Text can have disastrous effects if you don't do it properly

"The only current SEO Book on the planet.
Buy the industry standard #1 ranked SEO Book. What do the search engines think?

Google Search: SEO Book (#1)
Yahoo! Search: SEO Book (#1)
This is the #1 ranking SEO book on all major search engines.

it is on the first page of google for "seo"...the people in the top spot probably spend over 5 figures a month on advertising.

Exactly! It all depends on the product-personally I like the Firefox logo and would click it when I saw it.

I totally agree that TEXT links are much more effective...especially if it is done in a covert manner. Many times I'll come across Google Adwords, thinking that it is a part of the page (such as an article) only to come to a new website! Tricksters!
