Honestly, I'm a bit disappointed in Google after Sergei set some pretty lofty goals for last year. I really expected to see that number on their home page read 10 billion pages after this update.

http://www.usatoday.com/tech/webguid...7-google_x.htm
"For '03, Brin hopes to expand to catalog the Web's entire 10 billion pages. "I don't know if it will happen, but we hope to have the whole Web crawled."

What's not surprising is this announcement just hours before Microsoft quietly unveiled their new search engine which indexes 5 billion web pages.

http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/busine...tsearch11.html
"Microsoft said the MSN Search preview taps into an index of more than 5 billion documents, topping the 4.2 billion that have been included in the Google search. Last evening, as word of Microsoft's plans for the preview circulated through the technology industry, Google announced that it had finished a lengthy process of boosting its searchable index to more than 8 billion Web pages."

Trying to steal a little thunder Sergei?

looks like a repeat of what they pulled on Yahoo earlier this year:

http://www.usatoday.com/tech/webguid...8-google_x.htm
Internet search giant Google said Tuesday that it now accesses more than 6 billion Web pages, images and online postings.

The move was a pre-emptive strike in the Search Engine Wars. Wednesday, longtime partner Yahoo dumped Google as its search partner and unveiled its own search technology

My observatiion is that SEO/SEM is all the more important now that we have so many other pages to compete against.
You can see how all of the empasis on links has led to this inflated, bloated and not necessarily more informative internet. Some sites have 10's of thousands of pages but add no real value. Until the emphasis is taken off of links then this trend will probablly continue and this time next year the number will be at 12,000,000,000 or more.

What say you?

It's worked well for me! Used to be that I had one result for each of my top search terms that showed up halfway down page one. Now for EACH of those terms, I have both the #1 and #2 position.

Another couple of search terms bumped me from mid page 2 to the bottom of page 1. AND on another site, we went from mid page 2 to mid page 3. For us, searching our many geographic oriented pages, we now blast the long established ones, even in large cities like L.A. and take both #3 and #4 in Chicago and New York.

Again... cream rises to the top in the big G!

All that aside, numbers don't impress me much. It's like which bank has the tallest building. Bragging rights, that's all. Has little to do with the consumer. It just means twice as many crap pages to weed through after page 10 to find the gold nuggets.
