zipped files in sitemap?

I noticed on wwd.coms site that their site map is pointing to zipped files that contain larger xml files.

I got their sitemap from their robots.txt file:
http://www.wwd.com/robots.txt

Then the robots.txt file points to:
http://www.wwd.com/gxml-sitemap.xml

Does google index zipped files?

Why would wwd.com be doing this practice?

Yeah, Google understands g-zip compressed sitemaps. If you need more details, you can try check this article about compressed xml sitemaps. Basicly it saves bandwidth!

The Gzip sitemap style has become like an online standard for some time now. A best example could be while you are using the Wordpress blog and have installed the Google Sitemap generator plugin and the files generated would be having the zipped format and Google will download and read the contents faster and even better in most cases.

I build wordpress blogs and install a sitemap plugin

I have the plugin set to build both a xml sitemap and a zipped sitemap

the search engines can then use whichever they prefer
