there are a lot of ways on how to improve or get backlinks..
  • article submission
  • forum posting
  • social bookmarking
  • press release submission
  • blog commenting( i am not sure if there's enough proof that no follow attribute has no value in terms of ranking and do not consider it as backlinks)

I would like also add video marketing and RSS submissions. This would also help you to gain backlinks.
