i dont think his asking about how to be on the top 10 sites on google in general, he means getting high ranking and get on the top 10 in his niche.

there are many ways to do it, from link bilding to quality content, relevant keywords in your content and many more. but not just one will do the trick, you have to work on many of them.

Get quality and relevant back links to yur site and use your keywords as a anchor text on link promotion. Definitely you will get position at top 10

My way: - Get links from old and highly trusted domains.
-Get site-wide links from a huge site with 150,000+ pages (or forum).
-A few deep links from relevant articles or content.
- Avoid link exchanges

Getting to the top of the Google search engine will actually differ according to the niches you have targeted, how old your site is, its link popularity and TrustRank over the net, how many pages it contains and whether or not they have been originally written, the PR of your homepage as well as those of your backlinks, etc.

There are lots of variables but generally the easiest way is:
1/ build a silo'd site using low competition search phrases
2/ ensure each page of the site has good quality content that's unique
3 ensure the site's pages are fully SEO'd with keyword titles, and page URL's
2/ get anchor text dofollow backlinks from web pages with existing pagerank

that should get you started - you can add more pages later to target the more difficult search phrases - best to aim low at the start

Choose your main keywords and put these in your title tag, your keywords tag and your description tag.
Remember that Google count as more important the keywords running from left to right.
In other words put your most important keywords first, the next important next etc...

Next make sure you use H1 tags, right at the toip of the page, and put your keywords in them. You can use CSS to make the size more acceptable.

Dont forget to use alt tags with your keywords in for all images and to also use title tags for both links and images.

Make sure that the last thing on your page is the H1 tags with your keywords in again.
Use good content on your page. Repeat this process for each page on your website using different keywords for each page.

Add a sitemap and set up a good backlinking campaign, using deep linking.
Build lots of top quality links regularly.

Initially, yes - with a new thread

If the page has no existing pagerank then it's pagerank 0 - but if it's an old thread, then the page may have pagerank so your argument would not be valid

If you submit an article to an article directory - then it goes on a new page, with no existing pagerank - but depending on the article directory that page may have pagerank in a few months time

Commenting on blog posts with existing pagerank is probably the best way to go - just that you've got to mix it up a bit so google doesn't think you are keyword spamming, etc. - try and keep things natural and "normal"
