Nowadays I configure the sitebuilding platform using SEO - then I don't have to do anything else
e.g. wordpress blog platform - use SEO friendly wordpress theme, set up SEO friendly post url's, install SEO plugins, etc.
Then all I have to do is start my blog posts using the keyword phrase - e.g. "keyword phrase tips" "keyword phrase secrets", etc.
I only buy html or php sitebuilders that I can SEO - if I buy a sitebuilder and find it's "closed" - i.e. protected script, or desktop software, then I get my money back
This frees up a lot of time, so you can do backlink building, rather than repeatedly doing content SEO

Your best long term strategy will always be to develop good content, build a good site, good site structure, and keep it updated with information that your customer's need. No matter how google may change (or change their minds about things like funneling pagerank), if you've used good principles you'll always be OK.

Yeah, i agree with SmallPaul, continue with the oldschool ways as they are not changing any time soon. Keeping a uptodate site which visitors come to and think 'ill come back to this site later'.
Since google can change what it likes and what it doesnt like at a click of a button the future of SEO is always changing, but the core aspects arent

I believe social networking and bookmarking will continue to grow. The ability to use those to market your sites/posts will not go unnoticed by Google.
Speed will be a factor sometime down the road. Not a huge factor; remember there are 200 factors at the very least. Content and backlinks (PageRank) will continue to be the central and most important factors for the foreseeable future. Speed, when it does become a factor, will be a lightweight.
Accessibility will be a more heavily weighted factor. That's more than adding titles to your links and images, btw.
SEs will get smarter and they will begin to be able to tell the difference between well written and poorly written text. I think they do already, but this will become more pronounced.
Hope that helps.

I think the future of SEO will be better because it seems that more and more people are not doing it and are just running around looking for the quick buck so the one's who do put in effort to their sites' will have better returns in their rankings.

Build a solid site with current accepted SEO practices and then watch for the changes......for instance the meta tag changes.....
Good content....value to the reader....should hold for a long term.....
Not so sure if the engines will be able to tell if the content is good (hard to define good) but they can already measure relevance....
Seo really hasn't changed that much over the past several years.....except getting better at finding the "cheats".......

@Jim well it should always be the case when you are building a website
and SEO is about attracting real visitors to your site and not the search engines
so don't do any deceptive techniques that some will teach you to do...

holyground...I was doing blackhat before it was even called blackhat.......
In the day most techniques were not considered "bad" by the major engines....in the days before Google was the big one....some of the engines are now gone......
I do not do the black stuff anymore......

I think we are aproaching autimatic SEO when people won't control it at all, but use onlt software to do it.

Seo can be very confusing do you set up your site for the search engines or for your customers, google says it should be natural, seo forums say search engines. Also is link exchanging pointless or is there still some value in it?

My honest answer is there is no future in SEO. From my experiences I am seeing Google SERPS results strongly influenced by Google Toolbar

I guess it's all perspective. I've been doing SEO for about 12 years and for the first 5-7 I had no competition, nor did my clients. Now, I struggle with some of my client sites -- sites which rested at the top for years unchallenged -- to keep them in the top ten.
But I think the OP was asking about techniques, changes that may be coming to the algorithm.

Wow, not at all what I imagine. You could well be right, but I can't see it. There are tools, of course, that can help with SEO. Sometimes looking at the competition through the eyes of IBP can help me see part of what a site needs, but never the whole picture. Directory submissions can be automated, but we all know that doesn't work half as well as manual.
Tell us, please, where do you see this trend? If you're right, there's some money to be made there.

Really? How do you think that happens? I have never heard this idea before.
And why would that affect SEO?
Audrina, good references, very appropriate, rep points awarded.

Simple answer.....build your site for people first...they have the money...Google won't send it to you.......then SEO for the engines.....
Then learn other methods to drive traffic to your site......
Ask yourself this.....If Google closed today what would you do?

I'd swap out the google adsense code from all my sites and substitute Yahoo code
Then I'd go on a spending spree - Yahoo visitors are click happy, and Yahoo/Bing would mop up Google's previous searchers - so I'd make even more money than I do now
