Matt Cutts is an employee of Google. The above video is available on Google Webmaster Central Channel.

Getting information from the horse's mouth is bad?

*sigh*

I understand that. I can't see the video though as youtube is blocked today here at the library as a sex/porn site. I was asking for the answer to the question posed since I can't see what Cutts is saying as a response to the question asked.

The county library has a screwed up filter system, randomly blocks sites if someone views certain keywords and you have to get their IT department to unblock it. On a good day, it takes upwards to 3-4 hours to get a block removed.

I have to agree with the video. Nothing wrong with swapping links with sites that are in the same market or at least close. However, I would not do this with more that say 5 sites and that is stretching it a little. Best thing to do here would be to link to only one of these sites from your main site which would then link to all of the other sites, which also points back to the main site, hope that makes sense.

What he basically said is that cross-linking is best used when the sites make sense together, like men's, women's and children's clothing, as opposed to scuba diving, furniture restoration and motorcycle sites. He also said that having fewer sites cross-linked is better than lots of sites, he used the numbers 3 vs 30 or 300. He suggested you have a "person off the street" take a look at it and if they don't get why the sites are cross-linked it's probably a bad idea.

Hope that helps!

Before cross-linking consider the user's perspective and whether the crosslinks provide value. It should be done with relative site or else it's of no use.

The video doesn't seem to work. I do have some insight on the issue of cross-linking, though. I interlink my proxy sites because if a user is going to leave my site, I want them to go to another one of my sites From other videos by Matt Cutts, it's apparent that there's no such thing as a "bad" link or else people would be able to harm their competition. Worst case scenario is that a link counts for nothing. Interlinking sites can be kind of "watered down". Google cares about relevancy, though, so I agree with AmySueN about making sure the links make sense logically.

People can trade as many links as they want. There's no such thing as a penalty for that.

Not at all. It's common practice for hosting providers to place several sites on the same IP to prevent waste. It's a practice that started about 10 years ago. Google has known about this for a long time. They care more about content and relevancy than IP addresses.

For me Matt Cutts statement is true. When you do this kind of technique you must understand first what is your niche and what is also the niche that you want to cross linked. But an abuse on this method can also have a bad effect.

Cross linking would be highly helpful to rich persons.
They can register same niche domain a lot and cross linking them self so their site only appear top in serps.
Potential web page would be pull out from serps.
