heh, just borrows from other software, until they do there own mapping its just like all the others. If you truly need good maps when traveling use AAA's website. Since there whole organization is based on travel, they map all hotels/resurants/stops ect...

What was it that Google said their goal was:
"To deliver the information that people want, when they want it, and how they want it"
Maps seems to fit in perfectly with that statement. We need to watch these guys - Their gonna have a monopoly on "information" soon...!

The driving directions are clear (unlike the free competition) and it's not (currently) cluttered with ads - those ads that will apear are likely to be google adwords (read: unobtrusive, mainly text ads).
The fact that it's linked to Google Local means that it's mapping to local businesses you might be looking for is seamless... a feature simply not found in the alternative mapping site.

The reason I like it so much right now over mapquest or yahoo maps is the fact theres not a 100 ads on the site yet. But I'm sure google will adventually place regionally Sponsered Ads soon too.

One of the best uses of advertising I have ever seen I saw on a map site, it may be common now, but I was very impressed whem I first saw it.
Quite simply I printed out a map for a car journey that I was going to make, I refered to the map a few times and I suddenly noticed that all the ads on the page refered to specific businesses that where on my exact route. There was a resturant, a shop and some tourist attraction, all of which the ads had special offers for and all of which I passed on route. Superbly targeted advertising. I was pretty impressed with that.
