Urchin right now has server-based (non-hosted) reporting packages. I use Urchin 5 and no third party can see my stats.

So why is this bad?

urchin right NOW is server based, but soon google might just give it away for free like sitemeter (to display ads etc.)... they also might include it in a package to their adsense publishers and adwords users.

if this happens, google will be using these tools to gain more statistical data from their users. they'll be able to see and analyze advertising trends, search phrases, conversion rates, pages clicked, linking trends, other search engine traffic, spyware, cloaking etc....combine this with their knowledge of search engine algorithms and some crazy changes will be made.

i'm pretty sure that this might not be the greatest thing for us webmasters...just my opinion.

On the other hand, it might be good. Maybe they will ower the price or even bundle it with their Adwords program. I know of many webmasters/sompanies that can't afford the $895 for Urchin.

But I know what you're saying toddieg. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

i am not sure where you get that google will give it away free. Google, contrary to what you believe i guess, is in the business to make money. Most of their actual software products are certainly not free, and do not contain ads within them. Look at products like picasso and things like that. Yeah they have free demo versions which do not do much at all, but they are definatly paid. They are just trying to make a few extra $$ with this. I suspect they will even leave the coding team from the other company basically in tact.

Yes, very interesting news indeed. Have to see what happens I guess. I have been reading all the mixed reviews on some of the forums and blogging about some of the forum threads on my blog this morning. So interesting to read the different viewpoints and conspiracy theories.
