If a page is position 30 and I buy text ads that suddenly results in thousands of links, will the page drop out of the SERPS?

Will it affect the entire site or just the target page?

I don't think there is a definitive answer, but the buzz these days seems to be that you have to be careful with taking on too many links too fast, especially when they all have the same anchor text.

Dominic's post is good advice for positive effects.

I'd still like to know if rapid link building causes any negative effects. I expect the target page would drop, but am concerned about the site.

Any other examples/experiences/insights/guesses?

I you are going to pay that much, then you should be able to dictate the pace of the roll-out. Make sure you have a truck load of strong links from other sources before you start.
