Indexed vs. Cached Pages

I was recently asked by a commenter on the topic of article marketing:

"Can you elaborate a bit on difference between indexed and cached. While the former is good, are there advantages to an article being cached?"

To which I replied:

"Im not fully sure about this one, now that youre asked, but here is how I assume it works. Cached is a snapshot of the article that Google takes when it crawls the page. Cached pages can be a few days to a few weeks old, depending on the last time the crawler visited it. Google references information on cached pages to see if they are a good match for search queries. Indexed articles are the ones that come up in search results.

So essentially, if you are just building links with your articles, cached is really all you need because it says that the Google crawler has come along and seen the link in the article. If you are looking for traffic to come to your article so you can get clicks on the links in your article, build your credibility on a topic, or earn money from the number of times an article has been viewed or ads in the article have been clicked on, then you will want the article indexed so it shows up in search results.

Hence, promoting your articles by building links to them and getting more traffic will make it more likely Google crawlers will cache your page, and also see that it is popular for the keyword terms that you are targeting and index it as well."

Just wanted to know if I nailed this one or if there is a better explanation out there of the differences.

The displayed cache is a size limited archived snippet of the raw data as was fetched by the crawler; additionally, depending on the original document's file format, it may also be reformatted into HTML so as to be viewable in a standard graphical browser without need of a special viewer.

The cache will only be archived if the site owner/operator allows such.

The original and temporary complete cache data are processed by the indexing engine, which in turn updates the database from which all SERPs are obtained.

Following the archival, if allowed, of the snippet to be displayed, the balance of the cache data are discarded.

Caches pages are those when search engine bot or crawler come to your page or found any update on site while indexed pages are those means after reading the updated element google stores those new elements in Search Engine's database.

There is no restoration process.

Cache by google is the process of saving all the webpages completely which was crawled by google in its datebase.
And indexing is the process of saving all web page urls to google index which was crawled by robot.

Google does not save all of the raw data.

All that is archived for cache display is a snippet where allowed by the site owner/operator.

Much more than URLs alone are stored to the database.

And, the indices (plural) are not such data, but rather pointers to it.

By way of analogy, just as the index of a book tells you on which page(s) to find a particular subject, so too the SE's indices point to the place(s) in its database to find things.
