I heard at its peak, Googlebot goes 25 pages per second.

There are so many external factors though.
Page size,
Server Speed
Network Traffic volume
And on and on...

Factor in that there are an unknown number of multiples machines running the Googlebot. It's probably multithreaded as well.

The 25 pages per second stat is most likely from one server's server logs.
