Google is no longer number one...?
A search for 'search engine' on Google is currently throwing up AltaVista 1st, Lycos 2nd, Yahoo! 3rd and Google itself in a lowly 4th position!
A fairly sound demonstration that the Florida update has been far from successful methinks...

Google was #1 for "search engine" until the update before last.

LoM, you did the search using quotation marks. What do you get if you remove the q. marks?

No, I didn't - I said 'search engine'. And I did this deliberately to differentiate the search term from my sentence, but also to distinguish it from "search engine" - the syntax you would use if searching for a phrase.
Just in case of any confusion, I also provided a link.

Not to sound stupid, but ...
Wouldn't the quoted phrase be what you're looking for, in terms of finding the most accurate results? ... as opposed to bringing up 'search' and 'engine' ?
Regards,
Mike 'obviously not Danny Sullivan' Merz

Yes, it would... strictly speaking. But the likelihood is that a search for 'search engine' (no quotes) will still probably deliver what you're looking for, given how commonly the two words will appear together on the internet.
