Google stemming

Not sure how the technical term "stemming" applies properly - I had seen in specifically applied to plural and singular searches. Just that I've just seen it working on verb-ing as well - Google is highlighting search terms with the "ing" form even when not specified.

That would need an experiement to set up - the SERPs are going to be too complicated by anchor text.

But why is Google returning the "-ing" form as highlighted in SERPs?

Playing Devil's Advocate:

Possibly two separate issues. What do I use to determine relevency? What do I highlight on the page? One doesn't necessarily have to equal the other.
