It's not a mystery. Google is a big company with a HUGE research budget. They also do a lot of production testing.

So this was the big news !! ?

They will make lots of more money by adding one more sponsered results up there.

People won't see that those links are sponsered results, because of the simple fact that people don´t read and just start clicking right away.

That´s also one of the reason why the publisher text links work so well.

I doubt many people notice the number of sponsored links. I do think, however, that the continued commercialization of Google will hurt it in the long run. But as they are right now, they are less commercialized than most other places on the web - Yahoo!, MSN, etc.
