Lost Backlinks on Google

I have two websites that have a good number of backlinks (around 1000 backlinks). Both were started in 1995 and 1996 and were fairly popular at the time. I have never let the domains expire, nor have I ever transfered the domains.

However, for a period of time I pointed these domains to another website (to help get it off the ground). But I have since stopped doing that, making the original sites available again.

I recently noticed that Google is not giving me credit for most of the backlinks earned for both of these older sites. I'm guessing that these backlinks were erased when I pointed the domain to my other website.

Is there anyway to regain credit for these links? I have already submitted a request to help@google.com. I mostly got cookie cutter responses that haven't been of much help.

Thanks for your response.

Well, I'm not sure you should assume that you're not getting credit for links. Just because it doesn't show in a link: search, it doesn't mean that it's not being used in Google SERP calculations, IMHO.

How are you doing in the SERPs?

Over the last few years Google has been "mixing it up" as fas as the number of backlinks it shows. I know I have thousands to one site and it's rankings havn't gone down so the links are there. One day they all showed, the next only six showed.

In general, Yahoo and MSN give a better indication of the number of backlinks you have.
