do these work
Alt images - zero graphics?
Use same color as background for H1 and internal hyperlinks?

Not sure what you mean by the first one
As for the second one that is greatly frowned upon by all search engines

Do they work? Well, allegedly, same colour links works well enough to be auto-detected by Google for a mandatory penalty.

I don't know if they can catch you automatically, but if they find out you can be banned.

'Tricks' rarely if ever work. If they do work, it's usually only for the short term.
Read up on good SEO practices, rather than try to learn the spam techniques. It'll serve you better in the long run.

The bottom line, is that if you can think of an SEO trick, so can the SE's. Some can be automatically filtered for, and others perhaps soon will be.
As for alt tags - you may as well consider them as irrelevant for Google.

Sara, I have never seen google ban any single technique as long as the content matches what you are trying to rank for. Try to use non-relevant keywords and you do face a ban.

It is my understanding that alt tags do not work unless the image is a link.

Jazzy, lemme explain a little about html parsers. They dont give a damn whether a image is a link or not in the cae of the SE's. Now they could use a regex that gets whether it is a link or not by using something like m!<a (.*?)><img (.*?)alt=(.*?)></a>!mi but what would be the point in regexing 50 million possibilities per line of html. That is literally what they would have to do to parse every token on every line.
what is much easier is to parse out the alt tag itself with a simple m!<img (.*?)alt=(.*?)!mi and either use it or not use it. In the case of google, it is still used however it is given a very very low priority.
The thing is, every little consideration should be taken into account as it does increase the end result. That means alt tags, title tags, even style tags and bad html. ( I do not expect you understand the last 2 things and I dont often explain those in open forum)

Certainly alt tags are a part of a general optimisation process. However, for Google in particular, you're not really going to move for any vaguely competitive term simply by using optimised alt tags.

Brain absolutely. I agree 100%. but they are counted, in however small %'s. So, as you said, it is always a part of the general seo you should be doing.

It's usually best to shut up instead of answering a question when you indeed do not know the answer.
Recently many competitive keywords have been gotten by sites using ALT text of graphic links from other sites. It would appear that manufactured text links are easily filtered, but ALT text of links was spared.
www.beartoothkawasaki.com got top ten for Kawasaki Motorcycles only after I changed the header graphic ALT text to Kawasaki Motorcycles - it works. I've used ALT text for quite a while and often prefer it to text links.

William Cross, some day you might know something about SEO, but the day has yet to come.
Jazzee was 100% correct in her statement that it matters whether it's attached to a link or not.

Obviously, Google gave absolutely no weight to that alt text. Why? Because it's not attached to a clickable link.

WilliamC,
You are so full of hot air and bullshit (and lies) it's mind-boggling. If spreading misinformation was an Olympic sport, you'd be the world champion. Until you analyze alt tags, title tags, and style tags, you need to keep your fingers off your keyboard. If by "title tags" you mean "title attribute", you're way off the mark again. Google gives no weight to the title attribute, whether it be a link or not.
Learn first, then speak.
