Main Page Drop

I have this really annoying problem. I was ranked number one for a very competitive keyword, it was getting me a 1.000 extra visitors a day. Now the main page just dropped. Can't find it in the first 20 pages of the results for that competitive keyword. However 2 subpages come up on the second and third page for the keyword. But that's not what i want obviously.

Could it be that i linked from to many internal pages? Because i store every word people search on my website in a database and count how many times the word has been searched. From this data i keep an archive that is indexed by google ( about 11.000 pages ). All these pages link to the main page with the top keyword as anchor text.

Can this be the problem? Or can anybody tell me if they had the same problem and how they solved it?

Could be any number of things. Too much of the same anchor text. Too many site-wide links. Really hard to say without being familiar with the page and its links.
