Gmail Domain

I just found this, seems pretty cool.

Gmail for your business domains.

https://www.google.com/hosted/

I just applied for it hope to get it soon and check it out.

I also just got Windows Live Mail. Seems a bit odd looks like Outlook 2003

I am curious why people would want to use that instead of their own business domain, any ideas?

I'm not 100% sure how it works, but to me it sounds like you would send an email to say bob@domain.com but that would send to gmail. So its like using horde of domain.com/webmail its just a better option, I would love all my emails to be in the one spot. Easy to find things

Ok, but you can have all domain emails forward to one domain email. I think it's interesting, just don't get why one would use it. I have an email client pick up all my domain emails via pop3 and I like it that way.

I think you will set your email nameserver to theirs and host your email on gmail. So you will have a regular email account on your domain. You probably don't even need to have a site either. People can simply register their domain, set dns to gmail's email server and then have theirname@theirdomain.com as incoming and outgoing email.

I love my Gmail account... Here's why I use it Colleen...

From one Gmail account I am able to do the following.

a.) have 7 different websites with numerous email addys each (for example support@neo1seo.com, help@neo1seo.com, neo@neo1seo.com, neo@neo-1.com, admin@neo-1.com, neo@crackheadlighters.com, and on and on and on...)
b.) I don't have to store any emails on my server (saves server space)
c.) Almost 3 gigs of space
d.) quote of the day & joke of the day built in
e.) Chat is now built in (which is great because the whole firm uses gtalk to discuss projects and to reference a chat is as simple as using the Google search feature inside of my account)
f.) Alias cloaking is AWESOME! I can not only receive emails from each of those addys... I can also use a drop down when composing email to decide who I'm going to send mail as. I can set up endless alias'

So I'm not really sure how this will be much different than what I've already had set up for the last few months... I just signed up so I'll see I guess...

But the main reason I love it... is because I can send out as whomever@whateversite.com each time and all from one convenient location...

Actually for any of you currently using Gmail here's how to set up your account (I copied this from a tutorial I wrote a month ago)

Gmail How To:

I've come to realize over the last few months that a lot of my web buddies still are not using Gmail to the fullest extent that they could! So I thought that I'd ask a few questions and give a few cool little tricks / tutorials

Email forwarding - Do any of you currently use this? as it stands right now I have 6 set up for my gmail account. Here's what I mean, for my High School forum I use neo@neo-1.com which is sent to my gmail account. And I can send back as neo@neo-1.com! For clients I use neo@L3DG.com which also goes to the same gmail account... and can be sent back out as if I was using a site based email such as neomail / horde / or Squirel mail.

Set up - Very simple!
First go to your host / cpanel and go to your email forwarder section
Click add forwarder > help@neo-1.com >> neo1.l33t@gmail.com
(what that has done is just set up a simple forwarder to send any mail to help@neo-1.com to my gmail account)

That's the first step... the second step is to set up your gmail account so that you can send out emails that say they are from your site.
Steps:
  1. click settings on your main page in Gmail
  2. click on the accounts tab
  3. Click on add another email address (put in anything@yoursite.com) should be the same as the forwarder you previously set up.
  4. wait for the conformation from Gmail , click the link and be taken to a success page
  5. That's it!

Now the really cool part about this is when you are composing an email (depending on who you're sending it to) you will have a drop down box giving you the option to send the email as xxxxx or yyyyyy or zzzzzz (xy&z= different user names) for example:

If you wanted to have a number of emails on your site so it looks like you have a large staff you can set up forwarders like this

support@site.com
help@site.com
sales@site.com
info@site.com
webmaster@site.com
etc... etc... etc...

Then just go back through the steps 1 time for each forwarder you've set up and you have a very professional online setup that can be accessed from anywhere in the world you happen to be!

p.s. anyone that wants a free gmail account (currently 2.7Gigs of space & growing) just shoot me an email or a pm with your email addy and I'll send one out

Good points Neo, guess I am stuck in my ways. I noticed the new chat feature last time I logged into Gmail, had a few requests to be added, but have not yet used it.

I do the same thing neo.

I use email forwarders and I use the reply from function. Its great.

The only problem with forwarding is it keeps the original on the server, so you still need to use POP to get it off the server. I would love to use gmail, as neo said saves server space.

I can't believe that more people don't use it... Stuck in their old ways I assume?

And now that the chat feature is built into the gmail...

If I get an email from someone on Gtalk I can discuss it as I'm reading it... with them... throw a voice / audio server in there and it's like meeting in person! It's going to go there... It's amazing... and I love it... anyone not using it... well suffa sorry sucka's

Its pretty cool, I don't think it would really benefit people like me. I think more for businesses with several employees.

You can create a heap accounts for the staff members, mange them like change passwords, delete, limit the amount of storage. You can also do a little bit of customisation such as logos and colours.

Pretty sweet service, no more filling up my server space with stupid emails, google can now look after them all
