I think they are all going to run into a wall regarding the China censorship issue. There is nothing that Google can do about it at the moment.

Pretty much everyone that does business in China has to bend to their will in some form or another. DOesn't make it right, but they shouldn't be singled out.

I remember the US didn't do that with South Africa, Iraq, and a few other nations they didn't approve of their politics. Of course, with China borrowing the money to the US in order for them to keep bombing the world outside China, there is a slight conflict of interests here.

How would the US citizens and government have reacted when Google had entered the Iraqi market with a modified search engine in Saddam's days?

They censor Google in Germany & France. It's a pretty well-known fact. Why aren't people up in arms about that? That's been going on for awhile.

If Google themselves didn't censor it, the the gov't themselves would just block them out completely.

Some Middle Eastern countries frequently block out entire sites, information, etc.

What would be censored in Germany and France? I would like to see an example of this, I wonder what it would be that German or French people are supposed to be shut out from. I'm Dutch but speak both French and German, and I find the European press in general a lot more open than in China or the US, for example. If google would censor German searches it would censor Dutch searches too, as our political frames are very similar.

Here's a list of some sites that a guy found to be blocked in Google Germany or Google France:

http://cyber.law.harvard.edu/filteri.../results1.html

Looks like some holocaust, nazi sites, white power groups, etc are blocked from Germany.. And some Islam and religion related stuff blocked from France. Its not been updated for 4 years and the web is so large, so who knows how many sites are really excluded.

Oh, and AOL users in those countries would be experiencing this as well as AOL search uses their country specific search powered by Google.

Google is not a help organization. They want to earn more money. 1/4 of world is living at China. So, its a very high potential. If google doesn't do that, someone will.

Not censored at all in google.de, and those are only the first 3 I tried from that list.

I think they should. Google markets and has conducted itself pretty much as the morally good search engine. Their image reflects that, and that image comes with loaded expectations.

Ferre, I asked about censorship in China and Germany when Loren and I visited Google Japan, and they confirmed both and explained it. I'll be posting about it a bit later.

It seems to me this has turned into a witch hunt against Google since they started selling public shares and their services started growing.

For the web designers that say “shame on you Google” are probably the same ones trying to reach top ranking on the Google Serps when really they should ask Google to remove their sites from the index – that’s if that web master had any morals.

I think its only right that specific sites get censored anywhere in the world, they are some dangerous groups out there that have taken to the web such as those nazi sites, specific extreme religion sites and child abuse sites. In saying that there is a bad side to censorship, such as freedom of speech on the net and falling under control of authorities who will judge what you can say and read.

I'll be interested in reading John's update on the issue in Germany and China.
