Persoanlly Im against the universite professor shite, I mean unix boffins are all well and good for 1988 and stuff, why google would pin its future on had beens in beyond me.

A friend of mine was Redhat Software's 6th employee, and went on to make a nice chunk on his options. His business cards identified him as "Director of Miscellaneous"  Internet companies with a sense of humor can do stuff like that, I suppose. If I remember correctly, Monster.com's founder goes by the title "Chief Monster".

In a corporate structure, the oldies are usually there for two reasons.
#1. It is a way to ensure a foundation based on a sense of tradition is established and maintained
#2.Old age and treachery trumps youth and exuberance every day
