Why are we seeing this? Google mobile?

Google has been making a lot of mobile-related introductions recently. Why?

We are finding that mobile users are getting more sophisticated by the day. They are searching not just for the standard categories like weather and stock quotes, but they are also looking for more content. That symbolizes a certain maturity of the market. So we want to take advantage of that.

Google News for mobile devices, for example, is pretty unique in the mobile world. [It] only provides sources that were created specifically with your phone in mind. These are all sites that we have crawled and indexed that have been especially formulated for the phone or personal digital assistant [PDA]. When you click on something, the story [will be] formatted to fit on your phone.

I would think that Google is doing mobile stuff to corner the mobile market.

They are doing an excellent job there, good service. I use my PDA a lot for browsing as I have an unlimited internet connection with my phone company and use WIFI and if there's no WIFI around it uses GPRS instead, but I can surf wherever I am. I guess more and more people will use mobile devices to surf and even with windows mobile IE it is good to be able to search for sites that are not heavy on the graphics. I appreciate Google a lot for this service.

People are speculating that Google is working on their own mobile operating system. See article here. A company they "quietly acquired", secretive startup Android Inc, has been rumored to be working on a mobile OS. This might be old news to some, thought I should post it though.

It would be a great move, in my opinion. Cell phone companies would pay dearly to have a "Powered by Google" logo on their cell phones.
