Sites offline how bad is it.

How badly does it effect your site ranking if google bots try to crawl your site and server is down? Thats a bad thing right?

It doesn't hurt at all, only when your site is down for weeks it may have some negative effect but as soon as the site is back up the 'damage' will be restored very quickly.

Recently one of the biggest forums on the internet went down for good and it took more than a month before it had any effects on the serps for that domain.

Googlebot may be the least of your worries depending on how competitive and cut throat a market you're in. If you're site is down for just a few days you may find yourself sitting on the sidelines for 6 months.

If you're in a profitable market, it's a good idea to find a dependable host.
