Only PR4 or higher pages will show up on a link search. To find you actual backlink total type:
and ensure you include the quote marks.
I've seen a big decrease in backlinks for my own sites, so you're not the only one.

what is the definition of a PR4 site? im assuming a high traffic site? if so why wouldn't yahoo or dmoz be in my list of links?

Links of ANY PR are counted. They just aren't listed when you do the link: www.yourdomain.com search.

PR has nothing to do with traffic it's based on links. To see the PR of a page, install the Google Toolbar with advanced features and there'll be a green bar showing you the PR.

too see what pages google has indexed from your site try this
allinurl: www.yoursite.com
it's a great trick and can provide you with most of the information off the google toolbar, without having to install it....(except page rank, which might be the most important)

Hi Brian,
<<<<<<<<<<<
To find you actual backlink total type: "www.your-domain.com"
<<<<<<<<<<<
In the google search box? But surely this doesn't show back-links but just the number of pages with
www.your-domain.com

Quite right, tigermann - I should have been more clearer. Using:
link:
are both complimentary ways to investigate your backlinks - link: will show the higher PR pages, and "www.your.url" will simply show instances where your naked URL is used.
However, low PR links using generic anchor text are buggers to find.

Thanks Brian.
Looking quickly at just 1 site - I don't get different results whether I use the " " or not.
But, link and links give very different results:
link: "www.your.url" returned about 130
links: "www.your.url" returned about 400
Which is a better indication of backlinks?

it does not work right if you use quote marks or an s.
if you place a space between the link: and the other stuff and use " " you are mearly finding pages with your url on it and the word link somewhere on the page

So to get a more accurate indication of back-links, I should use:
link: www.your.url
without space
instead of
link: www.your.url
with a space?
.

Now this is a funny trick....
If I type "www.vierstra.com" I have, snif, 88.000
If I type it with the link: www.vierstra.com only 1400..
Anyone knows how to increass the pagerank of the other 86.600

Hey Gede,
Haven't seen a post from you for ages.
<<<<<
If I type "www.vierstra.com" I have, snif, 88.000
<<<<<
It could be that most of these are not backlinks - see awall19's post above.
<<<<<
If I type it with the link: www.vierstra.com only 1400..
<<<<<
Still PR7 is impressive .... and 1,400 bls showing!
Want to be the only website designer on the Home Page of this site?
I could swap a PR4 Home Page link for a PR7 backlink!!!

I would be interested in Triciprocal (TM) linking with other PR7 pages, but they wouldn't with me, because my PR7 page doesn't transfer page rank as it seems. The only advantage I have is that my other pages have PR6 and do transfer pagerank.
