What is PageRank?

Yes I used the search feature but I'm too lazy to scroll through 20 pages of results...

I found this definition of WikiPedia --> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pagerank
but I'm still a bit confused.

The Toolbar gives a different value than the Directory? If so, then what is the one you people are using? How can I view my own or other's pagerank?

Use the toolbar. PR is currently fluctuating so it may differ, but the toolbar is the best way to know what your PR is.

FWIW I sure prefer the newer Google Toolbar that's still in Beta.

Ok so I installed the toolbar. It tells me that my main log page has a rank of 4. Sure, neat, but what does it mean? That I get a lot of visitors? That I get people to come back to my site? That I sing in my shower? (I don't by the way).

Basically PR mean nothing. IMHO

Many people look at PR and want to have high PR but to me its SERPS. I would rather rank high and have a PR of 5 than not rank and a PR of 6.

SOme might say High PR gets you high rankings but this is false

The PR you see in the toolbar isn't "live" PR. It isn't the PR Google is currently using to help rank your page.

Your best bet is to realise it exists, realise the PR visible to the outside world doesn't have that much importance and then move back to focusing on building quality backlinks and coming up with good content.
