Recent algorithm changes - Google Inside Search Blog
Quote:
Today we’re continuing our long-standing series of blog posts to share the methodology and process behind our search ranking, evaluation and algorithmic changes. This summer we published a video that gives a glimpse into our overall process, and today we want to give you a flavor of specific algorithm changes by publishing a highlight list of many of the improvements we’ve made over the past couple weeks.
We’ve published hundreds of blog posts about search over the years on this blog, our Official Google Blog, and even on my personal blog. But we’re always looking for ways to give you even deeper insight into the over 500 changes we make to search in a given year. In that spirit, here’s a list of ten improvements from the past couple weeks:

What did this mean: Retiring a signal in Image search? I couldn't understand it.
Quote:
|
We decided to retire a signal in Image Search related to images that had references from multiple documents on the web.
|
In another word? Can you help?

Search Engine Land did a blog post that i'd thought i would share in here.
Improved Snippets, Rank Boost For “Official” Pages Among 10 New Google Algorithm Changes
Quote:
Google just posted about ten new algorithm changes it has made to how it shows and ranks search results. These include showing rich snippets more often, improving the quality of snippets, a better way of showing page titles for times when Google ignores the HTML title tag itself and a ranking boost for “official pages,” which Google says it can detect better now.
Snippets & Page Titles
Below are changes related to snippets — the descriptions that Google shows for web pages — and page titles. I’ve quoted from the Google blog post, where that’s appropriate and paraphrased in other cases to make things clearer.

Google and their annoying vidoes as usual only half the info for those of us who don't watch vids
Do you know I am on page one of Google etc for loads of SEO search terms but I have never watched a Google video! I mean never ever in my life & not since 2003 & my 16 hour a day SEO studies began
I don't watch vidoes as I don't have speakers on my PC so what use are videos to me I just read stuff.
Same quote trick I use going on here though I see
Hi Ho Hi Ho

Why are you going on about their videos? This post on Google's Inside Search blog doesn't have a video.

30 search quality highlights (with codenames!): December (2011)
Quote:
Today we’re continuing our monthly series with details about many of the improvements we make to search. For the month of December, you’ll find a list of 30 search improvements, 9 of which we’ve blogged about previously. In addition, to have a little fun we’re including a sampling of codenames along with the list.
Codenames make changes easier to talk about and remember, and they can also be a lot of fun. You might remember “Panda” and “Caffeine,” but you probably don’t remember last month’s “Top result selection code rewrite.” That’s why many of the search quality improvements we make have internal codenames.

Search quality highlights: 40 changes for February
Quote:
This month we have many improvements to celebrate. With 40 changes reported, that marks a new record for our monthly series on search quality. Most of the updates rolled out earlier this month, and a handful are actually rolling out today and tomorrow. We continue to improve many of our systems, including related searches, sitelinks, autocomplete, UI elements, indexing, synonyms, SafeSearch and more. Each individual change is subtle and important, and over time they add up to a radically improved search engine.
Here’s the list for February:

Looks like those changes are how google presents the search results. and not how the sites are ranked.
I think the article title is a little misleading.

Just reading through your ten recent algorythm changes article, and I have to be honest, most of it's going over my head! I'll need to get the dictionary out.

Search quality highlights: 53 changes for April
Quote:
We’ve had a zerg rush of 53+ launches this month in search. One of the big changes for me was our latest algorithm improvement to help you find more high-quality sites. But, that’s not all we’ve been up to. As you may recall, a couple months back we shared uncut video discussion of a spelling related change, and now that’s launched as well (see “More spell corrections for long queries”). Other highlights include changes in indexing, spelling, sitelinks, sports scores features and more. We even experimented with a couple more radical features, such as Really Advanced Search and Weather Control, but ultimately decided they were a little too foolish.
Here’s the real list for April:

Search quality highlights: 86 changes for June and July
Google is a little behind posting these but they did today:
Quote:
|
We’re back with the latest in our series of search quality highlights. We have a couple months to make up for, so this list is a doozy with 86 changes. You might notice we’ve made one subtle tweak as compared with prior blog posts. We’re no longer using separate descriptive names and codenames (we’re just listing one or the other). Many times the descriptive names really just repeated the information in the short description. Names are sometimes useful for providing a unique identifier for a given change, so in cases where we don’t have a name, we’re adding an ID number.

Search quality highlights: 65 changes for August and September
Quote:
|
Our latest installment of search quality highlights is here with 65 changes to report for August and September. As you may recall from our last post, in cases where we don’t have a descriptive name, we are using a unique ID number. August and September were both busy months as we launched new features, expanded the Knowledge Graph globally in English, and worked towards building the search engine of the future.
