Best way to acquire inbound links

What do you suggest is the best way to acquire inbound links. i seem to be having difficulty with this.

one method i have been using is find the sites my competitors are on using the back link function and trying to acquire links from these pages.

got any other ideas. please i am desperate to increase my keyword rankings?

also, when i do receive links, they seem to be on the "links" page of sites. are these not really useful if they are on there. i don't see many people interested in putting my site on their homepage!

There are many ways of getting links, but what it comes down to is you are asking somebody else to do something for you so you need to offer something in return. Like, a testimonial, a link back, awesome content or money.

First of all, I would exchange links only with sites with relevant content. Check out the websites page and make sure the page doesn't have a hundred links on it. Check the site out to make sure they are not banned form google or anything and check their backlinks to see if they are out promoting their site. Because if they are not, an exchange with them is of no use to you. I also prefer to be on a links page with sites that have similar content to mine. Believe it or not, I receive traffic from many sites that I have exchanged links with and I am on their links page for the most part. And since their content is similar to mine, it is targeted traffic. So, that is an added bonus. Remember link building does not only benefit serps but has other beneftis as well. I sent out a request awhile back and instead of an exchange I received a partnership. This classified ad site is promoting my hosting service to their advertisers. My point is you never know what will come out of a link exchange. Many people feel reciprocal link exchanges are old news, but I still think they have their place as long as they are with relevant sites and you do your research before you send out the request so you are only considering quality sites. JMO.

I have exchanged links with relevant sites as well who have put my link on their "links" page. I have received quite a bit of traffic from them. I have also received 4 partnerships from sites that I have sent requests to. Just make sure you are exchanging with quality sites.

You can also write articles and submit them to article sites.

A few methods which I have used and benefitted from them

List your website in directories.
Contact websites with similar themes to your site and request for a reciprocal link.
Add your site's URL in your signature in discussion forums and newsgroups. Keep your signature brief and genuinely contribute to discussions.

Janet,

Would you say that purchasing links on high ranked PR sites that have nothing to do with your content is not a good idea? for example we have purchased links on newisfree.com. John Scott already told me this is not the best place to purchase links because it is associated with lower quality sites such as bingo and gambling sites. generally would a site not associated with poor content (such as gambling) however of different content then the telecom industry be useful?

If you are buying the link purely for PR reasons, it would probably help you as long as it is on a quality website and cannot easily be identified as a link purchase by the se's. I am not sure how well they can determine this. I think that is still up to interpretation.

If you are doing it for traffic to your website, I probably would not recommend it since you may receive traffic, but this traffic would not be targeted since the site is not relevant to yours. Therefore, it would not help your site too much since you will have a low conversion rate for this traffic.

If you want to buy a text link, I would really suggest trying to purchase a link from a site relevant to your business. This way it would be a win-win situation all around.
