Does anyone make sense of this?

So i did research on my biggest competitors online. Basically i found the top three responses for all major keywords that i would want my site to respond to. I then identified those sites that consistently appeared in the top 3.

the major sites i have identified are:

Site
Callingcards.com links - 1,487 PR - 5
IDphonecard.com links - 10,134 PR - 6
PhonecardSavers.com links - 9,836 PR - 5
Masterbell.com links - 778,948 PR - 5
SpeedyPIN.com links - 336 PR - 5
AT&T Prepaid Phone cards links - 1,543 PR - 5

here are the stats for my page:
LDPOST.com links - 58,714 PR - 5

if i have more inbound links then most of those sites and an equivalent PR, why is my site showing up in the SERPS for Google as 80th or link? i have done everything i can try and compare. any suggestions? on where to proceed from here?

we were not always this far down. it recently just happened. John Scott suggested removing our paid link to news is free because of its association with gambling sites. any other suggestions?

all and any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

how do you define quality links exactly? and how do you know what is considered a quality link vs no quality? should it be totally relied on PR?

i was reading a post in digital points forum about pay for a link on statcounter.com, which as PR 10 ranked site. but it was pretty mutually agree that placing advertising on this site is not consist affective because Google is aware its selling PR.

Do your links have your keywords as the anchor text? That makes a huge difference.

is there a simple way to check that? to see what my anchor text is. i came to this company only about 6 months ago, and have been doing SEO only for the past two weeks or so. i am not really sure what my anchor links say.
