Why Google Is Picky About Profile Pictures

Interesting story. Please read it before responding.

Google is kind of anal about profile pictures. We already knew this, but it has been confirmed with a new post from MG Siegler on his personal blog.

He tells the story about how Google deleted his profile photo, which featured Siegler flipping off the camera. Google deleted it, he re-uploaded it, and they deleted it again. Since then, he has re-uploaded it with a Google+ logo over the finger, as pictured below:

I don't whether these guys are getting the hint. But I what I am taking from this is Google won't rank authors as very authoritative that are either zombies or angry and grumpy.

In both these cases I would be inclined to discount what these guys have to say. The message is, it's all about me, the author, and not about you, the reader.

I like the fact, that at least Google replied him back regarding the issue... Otherwise, in most cases, Google never bothered to answer anyone's query.

That is a very valid point.

People need to understand not to mix business profiles with personal ones.

If you think about it, the guy in the article is giving the single finger salute, you shouldn't be trying to establish yourself as an author or being authoritative. One word, Professionalism.

Do you see JK Rowling or Stephen King using pics like that? No! No legitimate and serious blogger/author would. It's not professional and can do more damage than good.

Plus, if you use Google's author rel tags, that pic would be in the search results.

If you are going to do something like this, don't commingle your profiles.

If someone wants to use unprofessional pics in a venue they control, it's their call. If they want to do it in a venue someone else (in this case, google) controls... Well, as the Russians say... Tuffshietzske. If you play on google's beach, you obey their lifeguards. It's like a restaurant or club that requires a tie. If you don't want to comply, don't go, but they have every right to set their own standards.
