You need to have patience. It doesn't happen overnight! If you stick with it and use the webmaster tool that was mentioned, you will start to see all your backlinks. I fell into that same thing, I wasn't seeing results as fast as I thought I should have been...but after a while I saw the increase. You will too.

I find that the Google webmaster tool is the best...at least in my opinion it is. Google Analytics is another useful tool to have to get a good look at how and where your traffic is generating from. Just my opinion.

Forum posting, blog commenting, article submitting, directory submitting or social bookmarking. All these methods work and help to raise your backlink number

1. Google do not index all the links that their bot finds.
2. WebMaster Tools does not show all the links that Google has actually compiled.
You are kept in the dark, to prevent people understanding, and then "gaming" their system!

This is true, you are left in the dark so you cannot game the system. But still a good tool to have to see how you site is being linked and work around that for a better outcome.

If you want to get your site crawled and indexed faster by google, you should build more quality backlinks by using different seo strategies, like forum posting, blog commenting and the other ways you do. Google only likes quality backlinks, not the quantities with low quality..

Well, if you've been doing link building for years, then you should measure your results using Google Webmaster Tools, Open Site Explorer by SEOMOz, Backlinkwatch and other tools for checking backlinks for you to see where your backlinks came from and determine their domain/page authority etc.
Knowing these important details will help you improve more your way of building links.

From my experience, it is best to try everything, SEO is one big experiment, and you never know until you try. I recommend trying a bit of everything and checking your analytics to see what the referring source was and why. Find your back linking niche by trial and error.

Experimenting is not necessarily a bad thing to do, but you should still have the basic SEO fundamentals down or all the experimenting you can end up being a big waist of time and effort. Just my opinion though.

No you cant end up with bad results of you experiment, if you dont experiment you will spend too much time doing the wrong thing. The point of experimenting is to save time and find out what works so you can stick to what works.

I have been manually submitting articles to about 10 directories. I've considered buying a service like Article Marketing Robot to take a lot of the work out of it, but only want to do so if this form of submission is effective. Anyone use AMR and have success?
