Do you have a speculation about when Google will update?
  • Do you think there has been a backlinks update?
  • Do you think there has been a PR update?
  • Are you seeing Google fluctuations?
  • Do you think there has been an algorithm update?

You may want to start with a basic understanding about Google updates before posting in this thread.

Actually,
Firstly, it is important to understand that sites do not have PageRank (PR); only individual pages have PR.

And, even though the Toolbar may not reflect such, every page that is indexed by Google has PR simply by virtue of its existence, even if it has no in-bound links.

Ranking Changes Anyone?

With the latest announcement of hitting the overly-optimized pages (I'd not say it overly-optimized sites) I was wondering if people can share their experiences on any ranking change they are seeing.

I personally see, some of the keywords going down and others coming up. Perhaps a dance, or the new algo.

They go up and down anyway - its kind of hard to tell the difference. But thinking about it, if it was anything to do with some kind of penalty surely it would be all downwards?

But from what I read, this thing about over-optimization isn't happening just yet anyway.

By the way, Google announced a Panda update Yesterday. Nobody rally knows what the update does, but expect some changes in the upcoming days...

Actually the Panda update is not an over-all site penalty. It's more like a page based penalty. Although, I've been seeing the pages still rank for long-tail keywords.

how not? if your site has 100 pages and some of them, let's say 20% get penalized by panda, then the over-all site rankings should drop...

You still have 80% of the traffic and not zero.

Hmmmm... that's a lot for SEVERAL websites. That might be percentage that makes you win money. Of course is not 0, but it's a lot.

That sounds just like google saying it only affects 1.6% of monthly queries, which in real numbers is 1.4 BILLION queries.

Well the point I was making is that Panda update is not a site based penalty rather it's page based. If it were a site based penalty all of your google traffic would go down to zero.

Per Matt Cutts' remarks of last week, such changes are a work in progress, to be effected in the future; i.e., not yet in place.

Any negative effects of an algorithmic change do not constitute a penalty, but simply a reevaluation of data.

A true penalty is a taking away of something in addition to that which was not rightfully attained.

The only true penalty here is to be removed from public display in the SERPS; i.e., to be banned.

The to be forthcoming change is not a penalty at all, but simply a revision of the manner in which data are evaluated and weighted, as are all algorithmic changes.

Setting aside the mis-characterization re. "penalty," there is no such thing as an "over-all site ranking."

Each and every page stands or falls on its own merits vis-a-vis a specific query string in the SERPs.

There's no correlation between traffic and number of pages that a site either has or are well ranked.

A given page may deliver 100% of a site's traffic, none at all, or any intermediate portion.

Only if the one true penalty, that of being banned, were imposed.

I was taken to task for missing the bolded item(s).
