WSJ Says Big Google Search Changes Coming? Reality Check Time!

Read the whole blog post first. Looking for some good feedback from everyone.

Quote:
The Wall Street Journal is out with a story saying that Google is about to make one of the biggest changes in its history of offering web search, providing more direct answers and gaining “semantic” smarts to understand more about what words mean. I’m scratching my head, since Google already does this. Methinks Google’s PR has exploded in ways it didn’t expect.

Beyond Blue Links!

From the story, we learn things such as:

Google Focusing on Semantic Search Technology

Some news just posted.

Quote:
According to a recent interview with Amit Singhal, a top executive at Google Search, Google is planning on making drastic algorithmic changes in the near future in order to provide end users better search results. Google is hopeful that the new changes, which will be primarily focused on semantic search technology, will solidify their dominance in the search engine market and help the company provide better mobile technology moving forward.

The algorithmic shift is partially motivated by Google’s plans to..

The Next Wave Of Google Algorithm Changes

More news to read. Things maybe changing bigtime.

Quote:
It sounds like Google’s algorithm is going to change again, and while I don’t believe in chasing the algorithm, I do find the impacts on our industry interesting, but even more so the impact it has on user behavior. The Wall Street Journal’s coverage of changes to Google to get people to stay on site longer to compete against Facebook may actually be a bad strategy for Google and more importantly bad for people. The article implies Google is slowly moving to an answer engine to compete against Siri, and becoming more semantic in nature. While I think for the end user this may be a great idea, it may actually hurt Google financially and it will be interesting to see how this evolves.

So how might this impact Google’s wallet? In the simplest terms Google’s revenue comes from clicks. The way the WSJ talks about these changes to the user experience, Google will provide more content that requires less clicking. Surfacing content to searches, if clicks decrease revenue decreases.

I feel that this change "big Google search change" is actually not coming anytime soon, despite the desire of Google wanting to. I believe for Google to semantically return result sets (from an understanding of human point of view) is still far away.
The reason I feel is simply that the content on majority of web that Google is aware of is based on "not semantics" though perhaps when html5 come to populate the open web, this may result in major changes as per the article shared.
I feel, Google is trying to find ways to adapt to ever changing technologies.

As I actually do not own iphone 4s (though want it :-) just because it has siri technology

Now we know that Google does use machine learning, yet, their fears of unknown allows them to also keep human element in place (with a good purpose I think) since, once again, the majority of open web isn't ready for semantic search (for what it is worth)

As for everthing (search) that stands as it is, why re invent the wheel, or replace it with alien technology

Let's breakdown the new changes into micro analysis -

Google is all set to send another BUMMER at us! This move will surely wipe out AutoBlogs and spun content blogs. The way it's all shaping up someday blackhat software tools might not even work. Its a bright future for our community!

Sites that are already in the limelight will get extra exposure, new sites with 100% original content might have a chance to outperform but it will be TOUGH..

There's one good point though - The amount of JUNK will drastically reduce!

This could also signify that the amount of traffic previously received for any kind of Niche Websites will consolidate to almost zero!

I have been reading about this for couple of days now on different sites. They want Siri like artificial intelligence to answer users' questions on Google. I completely believe that it is going to hurt sites who publish a lot of fact based articles and how to guides.

All others need not worry. Google has to be careful though. If the bot starts to steal words from websites the officials will end up seeing themselves spending more time in the court.
