You're #1! Now what?

For all of you that have worked for months and probably years to reach the #1 spot in Google for a highly competitive keyword phrase....

What do you do to stay there and does being number one help with any of the work that got you there. (For example: More people linking to you because of your ranking allows for less link building)

There are a great number of threads here offering advice to get to number one, now all those things are being done to you instead of by you.

How do you keep ahead?

First off lets eliminate content. Quite sure continuing with quality and original content is a given.

#1 spots in Google for a highly competitive keyword phrase could change by algorithms even if you are working hard to consolidate your positions.

I don't get obsess by the #1 rankings until I rank in the first top 10 positions.

There is a big difference between ranking high and converting traffic into sales. Ranking #1 doesn't mean that you will convert into sales, it really depends of what people are looking for and if they found what they want to read or to buy on your site.

So ranking #1 for a long time doesn't mean that you will rank in this particular position forever. It is like a boxing competition, one day you will lose when someone is bigger or better than you.

hahah good comment.. agree that the position is not permanent.. but many known sites are in #1 position ( my competitors) since years...some time top 3 are changing ....never others come up including me (bcz m not a good SEO)...After close watch I realized that the well optimized site with fresh and updated content and some good quality BLs helps them to reach and stay in the top position

Agreed folks, Positions do change in time and flows virtually. And it stumble from first position.

Google change their SERP values in a mean time, we cant judge to an end. That makes you on top place under Search Results.

Good rankings definitely mean good traffic and good traffic means good earnings. So, what I feel is even after reaching #1 in ranking, we should continue building links.

I disagree with you, good rankings doesn't mean good traffic and good traffic doesn't mean good earnings.

You can rank #1 for a keywords or keyprhases where noboby will search for the terms.

Good traffic will not necessary convert into sales or earnings if you don't have a proper call fo actions.

I agree. There are a number of factors that have to come together from targeting the right keyword to right layout to proper call to actions.

Getting all this right, do you find it easier to stay #1 or getting to #1 for a competitive keyword.

I am a resistant by nature, so I resist to stay #1 on many positions

It is easy if you find the right formula of high quality content and excellent contextual anchor text links.

I have a friend who's been sitting on the top spot for some keywords. I asked him this: Are people really searching for that keyword? Yes, he might be at number one, but that doesn't really guarantee you a lot of visits from people. If you're going to sit on the top position, and people are looking for something else, that's not really going to do anything good for you. You may have the traffic, but would that traffic be converting if they're not after the things that you post on your site?

To answer your question, I would just continue doing the things that I did that helped me reach the top position. That, and I will continue to create content that my target audience is looking for.

It is always good to see our website on #1 ranking for a competitive keyword. As it will give you the best relevant traffic for the website.

Now what further?
The main challenge is to keep it there on #1 position. And search & chase for more keywords / phrases to get good rankings.

Don't stop! What ever you were doing keep doing it. We were number one for several keywords a couple years ago and became lazy with our SEO. We have now dropped to 3-5 depending on the keyword and the company that now has the #1 spot for many of them is huge. It's going to be tough to bump them down. We'll sure try though!!

It really depends on what is your website about and your niche. If you're only interested in adsense beeing nr.1 on a specific keyword ensures you money. If you're selling some products , yes , it may be trickyer . But for adsense , beeing nr1 it's allmost all you need to monetize your website.
