Nobody knows the algorithm except Google, and even then I don't think anyone there knows the whole thing, even Matt Cutts has made references to not knowing how certain things work.
It's been relatively easy for people to reverse engineer Penguin because it's pretty straight forward, but the whole algorithm is another story.
You are best not worrying about it and following best practice as much as possible, the fundamental things haven't changed for years. However the fads never last, we used to be able to rank a site with just directories, then articles but neither work now unless done properly, i.e. trade related or local directories and articles properly written and added to good sites, the way they are intended to be used and not in isolation.

I do agree Steve. The thing matters is that one should not worry about it and just not go with just directories and articles in bulk. Local directories are really worth to use and the only well-written and rich article helps in that way.

Google every time try ti best to prevent spam activity and over optimization. In this algorithm google again one step ahead to prevent to unnatural way to site promotion. If you have working on right way then no need to worried about this updates. According to my experience, you should only used quality content and natural way to build links for site. Thanks

No one knows about the Google's algorithm, but one thing that has been showing that they also targeted low-quality back links sites in this update.

The game has always been about quality. The people are looking for quality on the Internet, and you have to make sure that you're doing it. Google's telling webmasters to focus on creating quality content, so if you want to go up Google's search result rankings, you have to follow what they're telling you to do.

Google ALO changes every month but the big ones Panda and Penguin makes scares of face of SEO's. It's true that Google update hurts and many times it is not good enough to accept but it's a Google nature to update, being a webmaster we cannot do anything accept changing our methods of optimization as Google changes.
Many go rich and many poor, it's a Geek work, you need to stay focus all the time, updating your sites, keeping yourself update, takes lots of time and energy not an easy job though.
At last I have only one think to say, if you are Geek than only try SEO :-)

As per Penguin update, Google considers quality backlinks, Google is continuously preventing link spamming to provide the better results to user,
Google panda considered on content mainly
Google Penguin considered links mainly.

every months google release some algorithms or some updates to decrease webspam because most of all website create content by copying site .... so if we have fresh content and trusted backlinks our website is safe

Hi,
One of the possible factors is click sampling. For instance, Google may bump your site up temporarily for some keywords and see how many people click on your result vs the other result. Also, they can track the bounce rate by seeing how many people go back to the search result and clicking on other links.
Bottom-line: Make your site look great to attract the visitors.

Don't know the way but I came to know that sites with too many backlinks (seems to be not natural) may be affected by Penguin update. However, if our website comply with google webmaster quality guidelines then there will be no issue with penguin or any other google updates.

No one really knows how the Google search engine works. But conventional knowledge states that Backlinks quality and quantity, contents and page authority are some of the factors Google considers.

I think you need to read the guidelines prescribe by those Penguins and Panda updates, if some one not following the rules laid down by Google than you may face a big downfall into your website traffic which may cause a big loss of revenue and earnings. Many big websites have also become the victim of those updates.

I think Google Algo will bring a site down if they notice that you are trying to trick your ranking this what Matt means by unnatural linkbuilding.
