Why doesn't Google...
Why doesn't Google advertise on their homepage? Maybe a single ad? The revenue they can generate is tremendous and at this point Google can't really harm its image -- as Google is so embedded in a lot of internet users' everyday use. I've written a blog post about this issue but can't post anything from it due to policy issues, but I want to know what you guys think of the idea.

Google makes enough revenue already with all the business's that they own plus Adsense and Adwords is there bread and butter.
I like there homepage clean and simple as I visit there to only use the search engine and don't want to see ads up there. Google got popular because of there simple homepage and it's search result's.
Even if Google decided to let adverts on there homepage, they would be charging xx,xxx for a placement on there as there homepage PR i think is a PR9 with millions of visitors a day. Also I think putting ads on there homepage would be iceing on the cake to move to using BING full time.

Google can make lots of money by advertising in it's homepage, but you have to understand that Google got impression mainly with simple homepage. So, they never want's to keep adverts in their homepage. However, sometimes they will be promoting some of their services (new one's or others) in the homepage by placing link.

I'm with Snakeaire. There at least has to be a pretense that the organic search results are untainted by commercial influences.

They want to provide the best user experience possible, part of this means that they only want to show the user what the user potentially wants to see. This is my best guess as to why they wouldn't do homepage adv's. They love targeted users.
plus it would kind of become annoying.

We give you another thing to think about. Why Google doesn't stop "I'm feeling lucky" option?
As you know they can make a huge profit by stopping this option. They can show more ads before user gets to the final page.
Reputable companies have red lines, which they will never cross these lines for profit.

Now all major search engines pay more attention to the users' experience. So does Google itself. Its simple homepage is the reason why so many people like it.

There arnīt any related ads they could post!
Except for their own services, or any ideas?
(In Fact, there is an ad, at least in the German version for the Google Chrome Browser )

Because Google know, in a long run branding is more important than little revenue. Lets imagine if Google open ads space to public, then Bing and Apple put their banner there, what happen? It surely damage their branding.

According to me, Google is already making a lot of money and moreover their homepage might look a bit unprofessional if they start placing ads.

Well, they simply do not feel the need because as soon as they place the first block of ad on their homepage, there will be bidders offering higher amounts to reserve their ads and this will go on for ever, like the case about AdWords and webmasters will be competing with each other and pretty soon, the simple, quiet homepage of Google will be filled with tons of ads and naturally damaging the credibility of the whole system. Nearly everyone likes to see the good old, simple style.
It's really interesting that unlike nearly all other major search engines, including Bing and Yahoo, from day one admins and managers of Google had simplicity in mind and they just used a colorful logo as the main decorative stuff for their homepage.

Interesting indeed... that ad spot could only be bought by very, very, very big companies. But I guess Google wants to keep its homepage clean. Tradition, maybe?
