Google neither follows any predetermined schedule for, nor gives advance notice of, the implementation of any changes to the SERP algorithm or the updating of Toolbar PageRank.

This is a huge update this month: "a change that noticeably impacts 11.8% of our queries"
http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2011/...-sites-in.html
Crossing the fingers, each time Google update their algorithm I take a dive. I just fixed my site for the last algorithm, and they are already updating. No time for rest.

Cutts: Google Launched Another Update During The EMD Update
Quote:
Friday afternoon, Google launched a major algorithm update coined as being "minor" that targeted low quality exact match domains - the EMD update...
...to make things even more confusing, @GregrySmith was able to get Google's Matt Cutts to confirm that the EMD update was not the only update happening at that time. Matt confirmed on Twitter that at least one other update was released around the same time...

All affiliate sites, many with good articles, great product browsing, responsive design etc. Traffic is down 90% overnight - conversions on whats left are terrible! Never ever seen it this bad. If Google are trying to eliminate affiliate sites they did a pretty good job on mine.

I feel sorry for you, welcome to the club
The only positive thing Google did is ditching the EMD which was the most ridiculous and unfair ways to rank sites.
Sites that are in gray area with blogs and many other sites purposely made for SEO (little link farms under Google radar) are still there and ranking to the top. The reason for that is a recent algorithm update switching power from contents to links.
I've got some decent articles that ranked for years and now there are no where. The time you take a look and observe the SERP for a while before any intervention, Google have already made some changes. It is almost impossible today to find a certain stability if you are not a big corporation, or big site.
It is really like a deadly roller coaster ride going full speed.

It wasn't that important a factor for some time.
From 2011 Search Engine Ranking Factors Domain Level Keyword Usage: Domain Level Keyword Usage — Correlated Data.
Quote:
These features cover how keywords are used in the root or subdomain name, and how impactful that might be on search engine rankings.
NOTE: We've seen a significant drop from years past in both the importance placed on this feature by our panel of voters as well as the correlation data. In June of 2010, exact-match .com domains had a 0.38 correlation w/ higher rankings. As of late March 2011, that number is down to 0.22 - one of the biggest drops in the entire dataset.

Well you know Deepsand, it is the little things that put your competitors above you.
From what I read on Webmaster World it is a few Google updates in a short time and we as webmasters are smashed update after update, it just makes me sad to read all the good guys hitted by Google, it looks like a carnage! http://www.webmasterworld.com/google/4503674.htm
