Google's Lava Lamps
Google loves lava lamps.
http://www.v7n.com/forums/gallery/browseimages.php?c=22
What image are they trying to evoke? What image do most people associate with lava lamps?
They were big during the 70's, no? And amongst the anti-establishment crowd, no?

They were born with the sudden drugs/music explosion. They're icons of the psychedelic era. I remember the first time I saw one. Far out, man.
Incense was big too, and black lights. I actually have never liked them. Always thought they were kind of dumb. Haven't seen one recently to see if I still think that way, this was like .. 37-38 years ago.
We used to say "far out" in complete earnest. lol

"Groovy" wasn't high on the list in our area, "far out" was right up there though, and "outta sight" was about in between near the middle somewhere.

I still do...Far out man!
I had a black light too in my bedroom. Also had one of those giant posters which had black velvet on it and you coloured in the design with textas of your choosing.

Well, I kind of dropped that, as things evolved it was simply dropped as I remember, even to the point where it was actually uncool to say it anymore. Maybe we were just growing up. I think the novelty of it got old or something.
Gosh when I look back just 40 years even, I am floored by the amount of change that has taken place. It's kind of scary really.

I think the image they are trying to evoke is "fun".
I like lava lamps, blacklights, and incense too. I used to have blacklights (but not anymore), and I have one lava lamp in what I like to call our "funky" room ( a second bedroom). And incense smells really nice, so I burn that pretty often. Its not just a 70's thing. Cuz I wasn't even born then.

My younger bro has a few lava lamps. My dad was into them about 2 years ago too.

The explosion began in the mid 60's with The Beatles. I remember it well. I remember dancing to the Stones "Satisfaction" with the neighbor girl, she was my first kiss. I thought it was pretty gross though, but interesting, kissing. I was like 12 or 13 y's/o I think. I didn't see lamps till about 1968 or 69 though, as I recall.

I'm not doubting you. Just saying that the image is different now.

probably so... even though the one I have is from the 70s... it probably still proves only geeks have them these days.

Yeah I know.
The first thing I thought when I saw the lamps in John's photos is that Google was being a bit sarcastic, but now that John's raised the question I've become kind of curious about it too. What image are they trying to evoke? Experimentation? That's basically what the whole 70's decade was about really. Wild and crazy experimentation. Breaking the status quo.

I have seen these before. My guess is that Schmidt and Page just really like lava lamps and think its funny that they can put so many everywhere.
