Transfering PR

Okay, for my site I made new pages, which differ in file name, extension, etc. than the original pages. Is there a way to like tell it to transfer the PR to the new pages? Can this be done with the .htaccess file or something? If so, how? Someone was telling me something about doing that once, but I don't really understand it.

You would want to 301 redirect the old pages to the new pages. This should transfer the existing PR to the new pages. You can add something like this to your .htaccess file:

Code:
redirect 301 /oldpage.html http://www.yourwebsite.com/newpage.php

tobrien is liked by many
I did the above recently on one of my sites and went from PR4 to PR0 overnight - still sitting at PR0 some 4 weeks later.

Ho hum...

Redirects should come with a health warning

only start worrying about loss of PR if your traffic is affected negatively - or if you sell text links

A 301 redirect tells search engines your page has moved permanently so it will pass on the PR eventually

The new pages dont show visual toolbar PR until the next update.

Dcristo is spot on. What needs to be added is that although they do not pass on VISUAL pr until the next time around, most times a 301 WILL pass on the 'true' PR pretty darn quickly--well before the update.

Watch the rankingsand the traffic --not the green bar...(grin)
