Which characters are allowed in title tags?

I read somewhere that having more than 60 characters, or having non-alphanumeric characters in your <title> tag is bad for google ranking. Is that true? (And can I take my title to around 66 characters? )

66 characters seem to be way too long for title. You want to pick the MOST important keywords and put it there. Avoid any unnecessary characters such as "-", "!", ",", trademark character, registered mark character, etc. Also the order of the keywords is important too.
