Google URL Removal Tool and robots.txt?

Hi, I've encountered a strange thing. On it's webmasters help google say that it supports using of "*" and "$" symbols in robots.txt but google removal tool reports an error when I try to remove some urls using robots.txt and use "*" in it. Does anybody else experienced that?

...Additionally, Google has introduced increased flexibility to the robots.txt file standard through the use asterisks. Disallow patterns may include "*" to match any sequence of characters, and patterns may end in "$" to indicate the end of a name.
